I write pieces, from time to time, usually in the form of email, and usually sent to a particular group of friends. What I write often relates to science (recent eclipse, for example), or my experience in some situation, or whatever seems might be interesting. I’ve been doing this, off and on, for over ten years. Some people have said that I write well, and I wish the teachers of my teenage years could hear that, but, mostly, I find that I enjoy it.

Since it’s quite a personal activity, I’m never sure how much to share. Some of what I write is ‘educational’ in the sense that it may fall deep enough into a niche that it’s old to me but new to you and might illuminate a new corner of the darkness. My mother’s father was a distigushed teacher and, growing up, I wanted to follow his footsteps, so perhaps some of this urge to disseminate comes from him. Regardless of my motive, which I’ll maybe understand better some day, here we go ..

Rather than use email, I’m exploring the idea of blogging – it’s a medium I like and I follow a few favorites that I’d like to try and emulate. This form is less limiting than email, allowing a more expressive style and, frankly, although I tell myself that you can easily tap the delete key, it’s doesn’t stop me feeling I’m imposing on your time and hospitality with every long email I send. This way, you join my readers, or not, when, or if, you feel inclined.

I’m still working on details. Being who I am, though you are reading a web page, I’m not writing HTML! I’m writing, for those who care, in a strongly typed programming langauge, and that too is part of the experiment. I alluded to shining light into dark corners; I believe that is a Good Thing™ to do and there are plenty shadows across the universe to keep me busy!

Boeing Starliner – After years of delay the first crewed Starliner launched yesterday and docked to ISS today. Not all was smooth (helium pressurant leaks and failed thrusters) but that’s why it’s a test flight.
