Formed in 1939, the 51st Highland Infantry Division was part of the territorial force; a great number of its men were taken prisoner in May 1940. After it was brought up to strength, the Division was engaged in the campaigns of North Africa in June 1942 and Sicily in July 1943. Highly experienced, the men were repatriated to Britain from November 1943 to prepare for Operation Overlord. On 6 June 1944, the 51st Highland Division landed on Juno Beach.

Boeing Starliner – After years of delay the first crewed Starliner launched yesterday and docked to ISS today. Not all was smooth (helium pressurant leaks and failed thrusters) but that’s why it’s a test flight.

Thirty years ago today, on February 14, 1990, the spacecraft Voyager 1 took its last sixty images. Voyager 1 had been launched years earlier, in 1977, and was leaving the solar system having passed by Jupiter and Saturn in 1979 and 1980.

In a simple depiction of the atomic theory of matter, all atoms are made up of three kinds of particle: neutrons and protons forming a core, and electrons which orbit that core. Neutrons and protons have nearly identical masses and electrons have a relatively tiny mass. Protons have a positive electric charge, neutrons no charge, and electrons are negatively charged.

A large meteor landed in Michigan on the evening of January 17, 2018. It lit up the sky for a few moments and impacted in farmland and lakes east of Howell. I noticed the flash but didn’t see it well, however a webcam in the attic caught it nicely. Notice the flash doesn’t disturb Wally:

Rosetta’s lander Philae is out of hibernation!

You may remember that last year I reported on the European Space Agency (ESA) cometary probe Rosetta which was placed in orbit around a comet (nick-name: 67P), from where it dropped a lander, Philae, to the surface. Instead of anchoring itself to the surface when it touched down, Philae bounced, at least twice, and came to a stop in a shadowed location over a kilometer away. Before its batteries ran down, it photographed its surrounding (mostly its own feet and a wall of rock) and completed other experimentation. One of the experiments required that Philae and Rosetta stay in contact via transmissions that would pass through the lightweight material that 67P is made of .. the intent being to interpret variations in the signal as pointers to the comet’s internal structure.

On July 14 the New Horizons spacecraft will fly past Pluto. At the time the mission was planned, Pluto was the only planet not explored by instrumentation sent from Earth. It is very unlikely we send another probe to Pluto for several decades; nothing is currently planned. Alan Stern, the Principal Investigator for the New Horizons Pluto mission, has been working on it since 1989 .. this is close to a once-in-a-lifetime event.

Over tonight and tomorrow morning the European Space Agency (ESA) will attempt to land a probe on a comet.

Next Friday, a 150 foot rock of primordial material from the early days of the Solar System will zip by the Earth. There are a lot of these asteroids flying around the Sun. With better and better detection systems, more and more have been located – this one was found last year (hence the name “2012 DA14” ~ now formally called Duende), and got instant attention because it would pass very close to the Earth this year, very close!
